PROJECT: Structural Stability and Soundness Certification of the artistic installation Fremor
TAGA Proyectos Escénicos carried out the structural certification of the project Fremor, an artwork by artist Marc Vilanova, installed on the elevated walkway of the Teatre Nacional de Catalunya (TNC) in Barcelona, as part of LLUM BCN 2026 – Festival of Light Arts.
Fremor is an artistic installation that transforms low-frequency underground vibrations — generated by urban infrastructures such as subway transport systems, road tunnels, and power plants — into visible mechanical movement. Using geophones, these vibrations are captured and translated into the synchronized motion of elevated illuminated tubes driven by motors.
As an elevated, dynamic installation open to the public within a large-scale cultural event such as LLUM BCN 2026, the project required specific structural verification to ensure stability, soundness, and safety throughout the exhibition period.
Scope of Work
The technical intervention included:
-
Structural calculation justification
-
Analysis of permanent and variable loads
-
Verification of dynamic loads associated with the motorized system
-
Ultimate and serviceability limit state checks
-
Global structural stability analysis
-
Review of connections, supports, and fixing systems
-
Issuance of the structural soundness and stability certificate in compliance with applicable regulations
This intervention ensures that the installation meets the structural requirements applicable to public environments and cultural events, providing safety for technical teams and visitors alike.
The structural assessment included verification under relevant European structural standards, consideration of dynamic effects induced by motorized movement, and validation of stability conditions in a public-access environment with temporary installation constraints.
Structural Engineering Applied to Festivals and Public Art
Temporary artistic installations presented at festivals such as LLUM BCN require rigorous structural analysis that considers not only static loads but also dynamic effects, real assembly conditions, and public interaction.
With this project, TAGA Proyectos Escénicos reinforces its expertise in structural certification for stage installations, public art, and complex temporary assemblies, combining structural engineering, regulatory compliance, and technical safety in service of artistic creation.
It is always a pleasure to collaborate with the Teatre Nacional de Catalunya on projects where art and engineering converge.
